A powerful explosion near Red Fort in Delhi has killed at least eight people, according to early confirmation from Delhi Police late Sunday evening. The blast took place close to one of the busy access roads leading toward the historic monument, triggering panic in the area and immediate deployment of emergency response teams.
Police and senior security officials rushed to the spot as ambulances moved the injured to nearby hospitals. Officers sealed off the surrounding streets and began combing operations to locate possible explosive remnants and forensic evidence. Multiple eyewitnesses described a loud, sharp blast followed by smoke and chaos. Several shops and vehicles in the vicinity were damaged.
A senior member of Delhi Police told reporters that investigators are not ruling out any possibility at this early stage, including a terror angle. “We will examine every lead. The priority at this moment is saving lives and securing the area,” he said.
Security around central Delhi has now been tightened, especially around tourist zones, metro stations, and public buildings. Central agencies have also been alerted, and the National Investigation Agency is expected to join the probe.
Doctors say the toll could rise because several of the injured are in critical condition. Hospitals have been instructed to keep additional trauma beds ready.
Red Fort remains one of the most protected landmarks in the capital, and an attack so close to it has already raised serious questions about how the explosive reached such a heavily monitored zone. Investigators will now be racing against time to determine the type of device used, possible motive, and whether there were more coordinated plans behind the blast.
The area will remain cordoned off until a full forensic sweep is completed. Officials are expected to brief the media again once first-stage evidence has been collected.
