The investigation into Sunday’s deadly Red Fort blast, which killed at least eight people and injured several others, has taken a new turn as Delhi Police detained a woman doctor and her brother from Lucknow for questioning in connection with the incident.

According to officials, the two were picked up after investigators traced digital and communication evidence suggesting possible links to one of the suspects believed to have travelled through Uttar Pradesh in the days leading up to the explosion. Both individuals are now being interrogated by a joint team from the Delhi Police Special Cell and Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Terror Squad (ATS).

Sources familiar with the case said the woman, a practising medical professional at a private hospital, and her brother, a local businessman, came under scrutiny after police detected “unusual financial transactions and encrypted messages” that may have been exchanged shortly before the blast. However, officials stressed that no formal arrests have yet been made, and the pair’s role, if any, remains under investigation.

Forensic experts and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are also working alongside Delhi Police to determine the origin of the explosive device, which early reports suggest may have been assembled using military-grade components.

The blast occurred near a busy access road to Red Fort, one of Delhi’s most crowded tourist zones, prompting a citywide security alert. Investigators have since expanded their search across multiple states, looking for what they believe could be a larger network involved in planning or facilitating the attack.

Officials say the Lucknow connection could be a critical lead, as early intelligence indicates the suspect or suspects may have transited through Uttar Pradesh in the days before the explosion. Several CCTV clips and mobile tower records are now being analysed.

Senior police officials said further details will be released after formal verification. Meanwhile, security has been stepped up across Delhi and neighbouring states as investigators race to identify the masterminds behind the blast that has shaken the capital’s sense of security.
