G7 Summit 2024: PM Modi Engages with Global Leaders in Italy
India’s Strategic Diplomacy: Highlights of PM Modi’s G7 Engagements
Strategic Diplomacy Takes Center Stage at G7

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his first international trip of his third term, visiting Italy to participate in the G7 Summit. This visit, occurring just four days after his swearing-in, underscores the importance of global outreach for his administration. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended invitations to twelve countries, including India, as part of her initiative to bridge the gap between the Global South and the G7, traditionally perceived as an elitist group.
During his 24-hour stay in Fasano, Apulia, PM Modi engaged in bilateral discussions with leaders from France, Germany, Japan, Italy, and the UK. Despite the absence of a formal meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, a brief exchange of greetings highlighted the event. The encounter with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was limited to a handshake, reflecting the ongoing tensions between India and Canada.
A significant interaction was PM Modi’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting took place ahead of the Swiss Peace conference on Ukraine. India reiterated its commitment to finding a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, though PM Modi opted to send a delegation from the Ministry of External Affairs to the conference in Lucerne instead of attending personally.
The G7 Summit provided a platform for India to reinforce its stance on key global issues and build on international partnerships. PM Modi’s participation signifies India’s proactive role in global diplomacy and its efforts to align with influential international forums.
In a symbolic gesture, Pope Francis addressed the G7 for the first time, invited by PM Meloni. This move was part of Meloni’s broader vision to dismantle the “West vs the Rest” narrative and foster inclusive dialogue.
PM Modi’s engagements at the G7 Summit highlight India’s strategic diplomacy and its commitment to addressing global challenges collaboratively. The visit not only solidified India’s position on the global stage but also demonstrated the nation’s readiness to contribute to international peace and development initiatives.
