Moscow, July 4, 2024

In a significant development ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Russia, Rostec, the Russian state-owned corporation, announced the initiation of local production of armour-piercing rounds in India. These rounds are designed for Russian-made T-72 and T-90 battle tanks, which are a key part of India’s land forces arsenal.

Rostec’s statement highlighted the strategic “Mango” projectiles, emphasizing their capability to penetrate modern tanks equipped with advanced protection systems. The localisation of such critical military components underscores the deepening defense cooperation between India and Russia.

Additionally, Rostec revealed plans to produce gunpowder in India, aligning with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. This move aims to enhance the self-reliance of India’s defense manufacturing sector.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit, scheduled for July 8-9, will include discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, further strengthening the bilateral ties and defense partnership between the two nations.

Russia has historically been a major supplier of military equipment to India, and this announcement reaffirms the ongoing collaboration in defense technology and manufacturing.
