PM Modi to Visit Russia: Focus on Trade Imbalance and Strengthening Bilateral Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Russia. Scheduled for July 8-9, the visit is seen as a crucial opportunity for direct discussions between PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on various issues, including trade imbalance and expanding bilateral trade.

“There are issues…like the trade imbalance,” Jaishankar noted, underscoring the need for leadership-level talks to address these concerns. He highlighted the strong and steady history of India-Russia relations and the value both nations place on their annual summit tradition.

This summit marks the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, resuming after a three-year hiatus. The last summit took place in December 2021 when President Putin visited New Delhi. Jaishankar conveyed the Indian government’s commitment to maintaining this tradition, citing his visit to Moscow last year to reaffirm India’s dedication to the annual summit.

India’s ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, described PM Modi’s visit as “very significant,” noting that Russia has become a vital source of energy resources for India. He also pointed out the expansion of trade in various sectors, making this visit critical for discussing bilateral and international issues.

During the visit, PM Modi’s agenda includes a private meeting with President Putin, delegation-level talks, and a visit to the VDNKH Complex. He will also address the Indian diaspora and discuss global issues, including the Ukraine-Russia war.

Jaishankar highlighted the need to balance the trade, which currently favors Russia, by expanding India’s export items and sustaining the growth in bilateral trade. “We are looking at new items, including agricultural products, ceramic tiles, auto components, engineering goods, and pharmaceuticals,” he added.

The visit aims to strengthen India-Russia relations, addressing trade challenges and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.
