Zelenskyy Urges More Support: Ukraine Needs 25 Patriot Systems and F-16s to Counter Russian Aggression
Kyiv, July 15, 2024 – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his first news conference since returning from the United States, made a compelling case for increased Western military aid to Ukraine. Addressing the media on Monday, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s urgent need for 25 Patriot air defense systems and a substantial number of additional F-16 warplanes to effectively counter Russian aggression and protect the nation’s airspace.
“Ukraine needs 25 Patriot air defense systems to fully defend our skies and safeguard the entire country from relentless Russian missile attacks,” Zelenskyy stated. He pointed out that the current number of Patriots in Ukraine’s arsenal is far from sufficient to cover the national power grid and critical infrastructure, which have been severely targeted by Russian forces.
In addition to the air defense systems, Zelenskyy stressed the necessity for more F-16 warplanes. While Western allies have pledged to send these fighter jets, with the first batch expected this summer and a second by the end of the year, Zelenskyy noted that the incoming aircraft alone will not be enough to change the course of the war. “The Russian air force is significantly larger, and to maintain parity, we will need far more warplanes,” he emphasized.
Zelenskyy’s appeal comes at a crucial time as Ukraine strives to repel Russia’s better-equipped and numerically superior military. He acknowledged the pivotal role of Western support, particularly from the United States, which he credited as the largest single contributor to Ukraine’s defense efforts. However, he also expressed concerns about the delays in military assistance, which had resulted in Ukrainian forces losing their strategic advantage on the front lines.
“A six-month delay in U.S. military aid meant that our forces lost the initiative. Since aid resumed in April, we have been working tirelessly to block the Russian offensive in eastern regions,” Zelenskyy explained. He called for a more consistent and timely delivery of military aid to prevent such setbacks in the future.
During the press conference, Zelenskyy also touched on other pressing issues. He expressed his readiness to work with Donald Trump should he win the upcoming U.S. presidential election, noting his belief that most Republicans support Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. “I am not afraid of that prospect,” he said confidently.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy revealed that discussions are underway for a second international gathering to discuss peace, emphasizing the need for Russia’s presence, which was absent in the first meeting. While no date has been set for this next round of talks, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of including all parties in the dialogue.
In terms of domestic affairs, Zelenskyy hinted at a potential reshuffle within the Ukrainian government, indicating ongoing discussions about various changes with some ministers. He also mentioned that efforts to mobilize more troops are progressing as planned, although he acknowledged the challenges posed by a shortage of training grounds and the delay in receiving promised Western weapons for 14 brigades.
