Jaishankar Strengthens Ties with Russia, New Zealand, and ASEAN Leaders in Laos

In a series of high-level diplomatic engagements, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with key counterparts in Vientiane, Laos, to bolster India’s bilateral relationships and reinforce its commitment to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Jaishankar held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, focusing on enhancing cooperation in education and agriculture technology. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN events, underscoring the strategic importance of India-Russia ties.

Furthering India’s international collaborations, Jaishankar met with New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Winston Peters. Their talks covered a wide range of topics, including education, agriculture technology, Pacific Islands, and the beloved sport of cricket, reflecting the diverse areas of mutual interest.

The visit also included a significant meeting with Brunei’s Foreign Minister, Dato Haji Erywan, where the two leaders launched a commemorative logo celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. Jaishankar expressed confidence in the future growth of these friendly ties.

Additionally, Jaishankar engaged with Laos’ Minister of Home Affairs, Vilayvo ng Bouddakham; Minister of Industry and Commerce, Malaithong Kommasith; Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Sanya Praseuth; and Special Envoy Alounkeo Kittikhoun. These discussions aimed at further strengthening India’s bilateral relations with Laos.

Jaishankar’s participation in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings highlighted India’s commitment to its Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific vision. He emphasized ASEAN’s role as the cornerstone of India’s regional strategy, aiming to deepen ties with the bloc as India marks a decade of its Act East Policy.

In his remarks at the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers Meeting, Jaishankar reiterated the importance of ASEAN in India’s foreign policy, aiming to enhance cooperation and address regional challenges collectively.
