Bangladesh’s Envoy to India Recalled Amid Diplomatic Reshuffle

Dhaka orders immediate recall of five envoys, including India’s High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman.

In a significant diplomatic shake-up, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has recalled five key ambassadors from their postings abroad, including the High Commissioner to India, Mustafizur Rahman. The recall also extends to diplomats in Brussels, Canberra, Lisbon, and the United Nations in New York.

This reshuffle comes in the wake of the recent recall of Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to the UK, sparking speculation about deeper changes within the country’s diplomatic corps.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have faced increased strain following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Protests, initially sparked by a controversial job quota system, escalated, leading to Hasina’s resignation and subsequent flight to India. The protests highlighted demands for fair employment, but also grew into a wider movement against corruption and authoritarianism.

The move signals potential shifts in Bangladesh’s foreign relations strategy as it navigates a politically volatile period.
