CBI Files Chargesheet Against Civic Volunteer in R G Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case
Kolkata – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed its first chargesheet accusing Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police, of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9, 2024. The case, which triggered widespread protests and a strike by junior doctors, has been under CBI investigation following Roy’s arrest shortly after the incident.
The 45-page chargesheet, submitted to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court in Sealdah, reveals that Roy acted alone in the crime, committed while under the influence of alcohol. The report indicates that CCTV footage showed Roy entering the hospital’s seminar room, where the doctor was resting during her night shift, and leaving after approximately 30 minutes. The victim’s body was later found in the same room, with 16 external and nine internal injuries noted.
DNA evidence from blood and tissue found on the victim’s nails matched Roy’s DNA, strengthening the case against him. The chargesheet does not mention any involvement of other individuals or gang rape. However, the investigation remains ongoing, according to CBI sources.
In a related development, former principal of the hospital Sandip Ghosh and a local police officer Abhijit Mondol were previously arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence and attempting to cover up the crime.
