Rahul Gandhi Responds to Congress’s Disappointing Performance in Haryana Elections
New Delhi, October 9, 2024 — In the aftermath of the Congress party’s unexpected defeat in the Haryana Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media and the public, expressing concern over the results. He indicated that the party is currently analyzing the electoral outcome, which he termed “unexpected,” while raising alarms about possible irregularities in vote counting across several Assembly constituencies.
Following the announcement of the results, Gandhi tweeted, thanking the citizens of Haryana for their support and acknowledging the efforts of Congress workers. He stated, “We are analyzing the unexpected result of Haryana. We will inform the Election Commission about the complaints coming from many Assembly constituencies. Heartfelt thanks to all the people of Haryana for their support and to our party workers for their tireless hard work. We will continue this fight for rights, for social and economic justice, for truth, and will keep raising your voice.”
The Congress party’s performance in Haryana was notably disappointing, securing only 37 seats out of 90, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a historic victory, winning 48 seats—its best performance since the state’s establishment in 1966.
In contrast to the situation in Haryana, Gandhi praised the Congress-National Conference alliance for its success in Jammu and Kashmir, declaring it a “victory of the Constitution.” He extended his gratitude to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stating, “INDIA’s victory in Jammu and Kashmir is a victory of the Constitution, a victory of democratic self-respect.”
With the National Conference-Congress alliance winning a majority with 48 seats, the BJP followed with 29 seats, marking its best-ever performance in the Union Territory.
As the Congress party evaluates its strategy moving forward, it will seek to address the challenges posed by the BJP’s resurgence, particularly in regions where it previously held an advantage.
