Delhi Chokes as AQI Reaches Hazardous Levels, IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Delhi is grappling with one of the worst pollution episodes in November in recent years, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) touched a staggering 487 on Monday. In some areas, the AQI crossed the hazardous threshold of 500, prompting severe health concerns across the city.

According to the data, the average PM2.5 concentration stood at 354 micrograms per cubic metre, over 20 times higher than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) safety standard. PM10 levels were also recorded at 12 times the permissible limit, exacerbating the already grim situation.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, warning residents to limit outdoor activities and take necessary precautions. The situation is attributed to stagnant weather conditions, vehicular emissions, and crop stubble burning in neighboring states.

Experts have highlighted the severe impact on vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory issues. Authorities are under pressure to implement emergency measures to curb pollution levels, as citizens demand immediate action to address the annual air quality crisis.

This alarming spike in pollution has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for sustainable solutions to improve air quality in the national capital.
