A fast-moving wildfire near Chance Harbour has doubled in size overnight, destroying multiple cabins and forcing emergency crews to expand evacuation zones in the surrounding area.

Officials confirmed that the fire, fueled by dry conditions and gusty winds, grew rapidly in the early morning hours, overwhelming firefighting efforts and leaving a trail of scorched forestland and damaged structures. Several seasonal cabins and cottages popular with vacationers were completely consumed by flames.

Local authorities issued urgent evacuation orders, urging residents and visitors to leave immediately as crews worked to establish control lines and protect critical infrastructure. Smoke from the fire has also prompted air quality warnings in nearby communities.

Emergency response teams, including water bombers and ground crews, are actively battling the blaze, which is now considered one of the most dangerous in the region this season. Officials say additional firefighting resources are being deployed to contain the spread and prevent it from reaching residential zones.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials suspect it may have started due to human activity in a nearby wooded area.

As damage assessments continue, residents have been asked to stay informed through official updates and avoid the area until it is declared safe. With hot, dry weather expected to persist, fire crews remain on high alert for potential flare-ups.
