NDP Defends Candidate Craig Sauvé Over Palestinian Flag Controversy in Montréal Byelection

The New Democratic Party (NDP) has come to the defense of its candidate, Craig Sauvé, running in the Montréal riding of LaSalle–Émard–Verdun, after criticism over the use of a Palestinian flag on his campaign pamphlet. Sauvé, who is a Montréal city councillor, is seen in the pamphlet standing in front of a Palestinian flag, which has drawn objections from the Conservative Party and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA).

Critics have accused Sauvé of importing foreign conflicts into Canadian politics. The CIJA expressed concern, calling the use of the flag an attempt to bring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into Québec’s political landscape, accusing Sauvé of stoking division. However, the NDP has dismissed these criticisms, calling them baseless.

In its statement, the NDP highlighted that Sauvé also included a Canadian flag on the pamphlet and emphasized that being pictured with a different nation’s flag should not be seen as un-Canadian. The party reiterated its stance supporting both Israeli and Palestinian lives and called for a ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

This controversy comes just days before the byelection on September 16, in which Sauvé is competing in what is expected to be a tight race. The Palestinian flag issue has become a focal point of debate, with the broader conflict in Gaza influencing the discourse in the riding, where many Arab and Muslim voters reside.
