In a major political development, CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as India’s new Vice-President, securing a comfortable victory backed by the ruling NDA coalition. The win further consolidates the NDA’s influence in the upper echelons of power and marks another setback for the Opposition bloc, which had fielded its own candidate but fell short of expectations.

The contest, closely watched in political circles, saw the Opposition suffer a significant blow when 15 of its votes were declared invalid during counting. This unexpected loss in numbers widened the gap in favour of Radhakrishnan, making the NDA’s path to victory much smoother.

Celebrations broke out within the NDA camp soon after the results were announced, with senior leaders hailing the outcome as a sign of continued public and political confidence in the coalition’s leadership. Radhakrishnan, a veteran politician and currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra, is known for his long association with the BJP and his reputation as an experienced administrator.

On the other hand, the INDIA bloc and its allies expressed disappointment, noting that the invalidation of votes dented their chances of mounting a stronger contest. Several leaders have called for an internal review of the lapse, highlighting the need for greater unity and coordination within the Opposition ranks.

As Radhakrishnan prepares to assume his new constitutional role, political observers note that his election will further strengthen the NDA’s influence in shaping parliamentary proceedings. The position of Vice-President, who also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, is expected to play a critical role in steering debates and maintaining order in the upper house at a time of heightened political tensions.

Radhakrishnan’s victory marks a decisive moment in the country’s political landscape, underscoring the challenges ahead for a fragmented Opposition and reaffirming the ruling alliance’s ability to secure key constitutional positions with strategic precision.
