Chinese President’s visit underscores Beijing’s focus on stability and development in the region

August 16, 2025 — Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Lhasa to participate in the 60th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region, highlighting the central government’s emphasis on unity, development, and national security in the strategically significant region.

During his visit, Xi attended a series of official events marking the milestone and reiterated the importance of “ethnic harmony, social stability, and economic progress” in Tibet. The celebrations showcased cultural performances, parades, and initiatives aimed at promoting infrastructure growth and improving livelihoods in the high-altitude region.

Xi’s presence in Lhasa comes amid heightened global attention on Tibet and Beijing’s efforts to strengthen its control over border areas, particularly in the context of regional security challenges and economic integration under the Belt and Road Initiative.

The anniversary marks six decades since Tibet was formally established as an autonomous region under China, a development Beijing views as central to its territorial integrity and national rejuvenation goals.
