“Scorching Heat Warning Persists in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec”

Ottawa, July 15, 2024 – Parts of eastern Ontario and western Quebec are set to endure soaring temperatures over the next few days, with relief expected by Tuesday night. A humid airmass is currently over the region, causing the temperature in Ottawa to reach a high of 30°C on Monday, feeling like 37°C with the humidex. Tuesday is projected to be even hotter, with a daytime high of 34°C and the humidex making it feel even warmer. Nighttime temperatures will remain above 20°C until a cooler airmass arrives on Tuesday night.

Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for Ottawa, Cornwall, Pembroke, and Gatineau. Public health officials are advising residents to take precautions to stay cool. Vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and the unhoused, are at particular risk, but everyone is encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, and wear loose-fitting clothing.

Officials recommend finding shade, using umbrellas, and for those without access to air conditioning, taking cool baths or visiting public buildings with air conditioning, pools, and splash pads. Residents can find resources and locations on Ottawa Public Health’s beat the heat website.
