Mandatory biometric update ensures accuracy as children grow, says Aadhaar authority
Content:
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a public advisory urging parents to update the Aadhaar biometrics of their children between the ages of five and seven. The update is part of UIDAI’s guidelines to ensure the Aadhaar data remains accurate as children grow and their biometric features evolve.
Biometric updates include re-capturing fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs — all of which change significantly during early childhood. While Aadhaar enrolment is available for infants and toddlers, biometrics collected before the age of five are not considered permanent and must be updated once the child crosses the five-year threshold.
The update process is free of cost and can be completed at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorized enrolment centre. Parents are required to carry the child’s original Aadhaar card and a valid proof of relationship, such as the Aadhaar card of a parent or legal guardian.
UIDAI officials emphasized that failing to update biometrics could lead to authentication errors in the future and may restrict access to government services linked to Aadhaar. The authority has also launched awareness campaigns in schools and health centres to help parents complete the process smoothly.
With Aadhaar becoming a key identification tool for services such as education, health, and subsidies, UIDAI is encouraging timely updates to ensure continued benefits and accurate identification across all age groups.
