Brampton Hospital Apologizes After Sikh Man’s Beard Shaved Without Consent
October 10, 2024
Brampton, ON: The William Osler Health System has issued a formal apology after hospital staff shaved the beard of an 85-year-old Sikh man without his consent, violating his religious beliefs. The incident, which occurred at Brampton Civic Hospital in late August, involved Joginder Singh Kaler, a practicing Sikh who had never shaved his beard in his life.
In a joint statement on Wednesday, Dr. Frank Martino, President and CEO, and Pardeep Singh Gill, Board Chair, expressed their deep regret, acknowledging the breach of cultural and religious practices. “We take full responsibility for this incident and have extended our sincerest apologies to the patient, his family, and the Sikh community,” the statement said.
The hospital confirmed that the beard was shaved without medical necessity while Kaler was unconscious, despite the family refusing permission. The health system has completed an investigation and pledged to implement changes to prevent future incidents. This will include staff training on cultural safety and humility to better respect patients’ religious beliefs.
The World Sikh Organization, which highlighted the issue last month, acknowledged the apology, calling the incident “unacceptable” but expressing hope that it will lead to improvements in respecting religious practices within healthcare.
This incident has raised concerns within Brampton’s large Sikh community, who expect their beliefs to be upheld in all aspects of care.
